C19th French Doors found in Derbyshire
EWB were invited to visit a non-descript brick built house in Dronfield, Derbyshire by the new owners to advise on some internal doors they thought might be suitable for auction.
The property was undergoing major modernisiation, but still hung on to it's secret. We entered the sitting room and were presented with the most magnicient pair of 19th century French carved walnut 8ft doors. The carving was incredible, each panel was different possibly representing the different seasons. They were complete down to the original architrave, hidden hinges and gilt bronze winged Medusa head handles.
The history of the doors was largely unknown, the first owner who built the house for himself in 1926 fitted them, but no one knows where they originated from. The second owners who lived there for forty years coveted doors ensuring they survived.
The doors are lot 10 in our auction on 18th October with an estimate £1-£2,000 and will be available to view in-situ strictly by appoinment.
