Are there still charity finds out there?
One of the most appealing aspects of charity shops is the potential to discover valuable items at a fraction of their original cost. Many people have stumbled upon designer clothing, rare books, vintage jewellery, and even valuable antiques while browsing through the shelves of their local charity shop. These finds can sometimes be worth significantly more than the price paid, making the experience akin to a treasure hunt.
One vendor came to us with an unusual vase which cost them the princely sum of 30p! The vase was handed to our senior ceramic expert who identified it as a Linthorpe pottery onion vase designed by Christopher Dresser between 1879 – 89.
Dresser designed over 1,000 pots for the Linthorpe Pottery in Middlesbrough, putting the town on the map as a centre for some of the most influential and innovative ceramic designs of all time.
A similar vase is shown on the Tees Valley Museums website.
Although the vase did have a small chip to the rim, this didn’t distract bidders when the vase came up for auction at our Fine Art and Antiques Auction on 3rd October 2024. The vase finally realised a £340 hammer price, a 113,000% profit!
It’s always worth scouring the charity shops as you never know what you might find.
