Coins, Medals & Militaria
Pictured: Five medals awarded to Sjt. H. Froggat, Gordon Highlanders (8734 Sjt. H. Froggatt 1/GORD Highrs), 1914 star and a WWI trio with a long service and good conduct and meritorious service medal, original presentation box. Harry Froggatt served in The Gordon Highlanders from 1902 - 1924 with the Depot, 1st and 6th Battalions. He was captured in 1914 when 1st Gordons were captured at Le Cateau. He made six attempts to escape, each time being increasingly severely punished by the Germans on his re-capture. At one point, the Camp Commandant threatened to send him for trial by a Military Tribunal for Contempt of Court – for having refused to reveal how he had escaped; the likely sentence for this would have been death. By February 1918 he was interned in neutral Holland; it is not clear if this was the result of a final successful escape, or as part of the general transfer of sick and wounded prisoners. He remained in Holland for the duration of the war and then re-joined his Regiment after the war to complete his service. Sold for £1,200.
